Hike to the Calvaire chapel: the viewpoint
A steep climb, rewarded by one of the island's most beautiful panoramas.
The Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire chapel is one of the most popular viewpoints in La Désirade. Here's what you need to know before setting off.
The path
The trail is lined with large white crosses, like a stations-of-the-cross route, leading up to the small chapel at the top. The climb gets genuinely steep near the end — bring good shoes and water, even for a short hike.
Duration and difficulty
Allow about 30 to 45 minutes to climb depending on your pace, with moderate to difficult exertion mainly due to the slope. It's not accessible to all mobility levels, but remains reasonable for a hiker in decent physical condition.
The viewpoint
The effort is well rewarded: from the lookout point, the view stretches over a large part of the island and the surrounding ocean — one of La Désirade's finest panoramas, especially photogenic late in the day.
Practical tip
Park your buggy at the foot of the path (easily reachable by off-road vehicle) and finish on foot. Aim for morning or late afternoon to avoid the harshest heat on this sun-exposed climb.
