Buggy vs car rental in La Désirade: which to choose?
Both options have their advantages — here's what you need to make the right choice for your trip.
This is one of the most common questions our customers ask before their visit. Here's an honest, unbiased comparison to help you choose based on what matters most to you.
The driving experience
A standard rental car offers more enclosed comfort (air conditioning, protection from sun and rain) and suits you well if you're travelling with a lot of luggage. A buggy, on the other hand, offers an open-air, more immersive and more fun experience — many of our customers tell us it's precisely that direct contact with the wind, the sun, and the scenery that makes their La Désirade memories unforgettable.
Access to the terrain
This is the most important point to consider: several spots on the island (the plateau, some paths toward the Calvaire chapel or the lighthouse) are only reachable via dirt trails or steep paths. A buggy, built for this kind of terrain, handles it comfortably. A standard tourist car can sometimes struggle, especially on the steepest sections.
The price
Rates are broadly comparable between a buggy and a standard rental car on the island, around €145/day for a 2-3 seat buggy at Buggy Désir. The quad, at €110/day, remains the most economical option for a solo or two-person trip.
Group size
For a group of 4 or more, a car remains more practical. For 1 to 3 people, a buggy or quad offer a far better experience for the same budget, or even cheaper with the quad.
Our take
If you're mainly looking for a memorable experience and you're 1 to 3 people, the buggy or quad are clearly the best choice. If you're travelling as a large group or with a lot of luggage, a car may be more practical.
