Best time to visit La Désirade
Climate, crowds, sargassum: what you need to know to pick the right dates for your stay.
As with all of Guadeloupe, the timing of your visit can genuinely shape your experience in La Désirade. Here's our honest, local take on the question.
Dry season (December to May): the most recommended period
This is generally the best time to visit: less rain, more pleasant heat, and often calmer sea conditions for the ferry crossing. It's also the busiest period for visitors, so book your crossing and your vehicle in advance.
Hurricane season (June to November)
This period sees more rainfall and a limited but real risk of tropical storm activity between August and October. That's not a reason to cancel your trip, but it's best to follow the weather forecast closely as your travel date approaches.
About sargassum
Like many islands in the Caribbean, La Désirade can occasionally be affected by sargassum seaweed washing ashore, which varies from year to year and by season. This can affect certain beaches at times. Feel free to contact us directly before your visit for an up-to-date local view on the situation during your stay — we're based on the island and follow the situation closely.
Our recommendation
If you have flexibility, aim for December to May for the best overall conditions. But La Désirade remains an enjoyable destination year-round for those who appreciate calm and authenticity, outside the peak crowds.
